YWCA Auckland turns 125 !
To celebrate this memorable anniversary in style, a “High Tea” hosted by the Patron of YWCA Aotearoa/New Zealand - Her Excellency Lady Susan Satyan and, wife of the Governor-General, was held at Government House on Thursday, June 3, 2010. Leading ladies of Auckland attended and heard about the YWCAs current activities. They also had the opportunity to reminisce about the rich and colourful history of the association.
The annual “Leadership Challenge” will be held in Auckland city on June 26, 2010. Up to 30 teams of 6 young women and their mentors will take part in an amazing race.
On August 11, 2010, a lavish Gala Dinner will be held at the Langham Hotel to celebrate the association’s achievements for women. The Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, head of the United Nations Development Programme will be one of the key guests and there will be a silent auction, proceeds of which will go towards the YWCA Auckland's leadership programmes.
The work of the YWCA in Auckland has a long history and a long list of supporters. The association has touched the lives of many women since its inception in 1885. From sports teams, beach camps and thrift clubs to holiday programmes and self-defence courses, they have always been part of Auckland's fabric.
As YWCA Auckland’s CEO, Hilary Sumpter, puts it: “the key to staying relevant for women is through empowerment”. Sumpter adds: “most Aucklanders have an aunt, mother, sister or grand-mother who has attended a free YWCA programme or stayed at a YWCA hostel at some time in their lives. Beach camps in the early part of the 20th Century, thrift clubs, human reproduction lectures (aka sex education for young women in the late ‘60’s), self-defence classes and mobile crèches in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Along with a few contentious times and a few ups and downs, the organisation is still very relevant today.”
Current activities include a Hostel in Vincent St, in the CBD, which contributes to funding operations, Encore – a free exercise programme for women recovering from breast cancer surgery, and Future Leaders – a four year mentoring leadership programme run in schools in Auckland. In addition the YWCA Auckland is a Voice for women, active in advocating on issues and supporting other organisations, which relate to women and young people in Auckland today.
