From intern to General Secretary
Jenta Tau

News has just come in that Jenta Tau, the 2011 World YWCA intern from the Solomon Islands, has been appointed the new General Secretary of the YWCA of the Solomon Islands.

As she announced the appointment Ms Alice Iwebu Kale, Jenta’s predecessor, said «  it’s a joy for all of us at the YWCASI to see another young woman take up this leadership role. We believe and trust that Ms Tau will continue the good work that YWCASI has done over the past few years, and through her experience at the world level she will contribute to expanding the work of the movement ». And in the words of Sarah Davies, a previous World YWCA intern and Strategic Development Manager, YWCA of Aotearoa/ New Zealand, “This appointment is a huge affirmation of young women’s leadership in the Pacific…”

Jenta had been working at the YWCA of the Solomon Islands as Programmes and Administration Officer since 2008, when she had the unique opportunity of being selected amongst numerous candidates to join the World YWCA office in Geneva, Switzerland for a one-year internship as Programme Associate. In addition to working at the World Office and learning new skills and more about the YWCA Movement, Jenta attended and participated in conferences in countries as diverse as Mali, Australia, Italy and Hungary. She also experienced the World YWCA Council in Zurich, Switzerland, where she met with many YWCA delegates from across the globe and was inspired by speeches by key women leaders.

The World YWCA warmly congratulates Jenta on her appointment and is particularly proud that one of its interns has returned home to take the lead of her association after spending a year at the World office.
